It's outer beige skin is hard and thick whilst the inside flesh is orange. The base of the fruit houses the seeds - this is the blossom end. When the squash is ripe it turns increasingly deep orange, and becomes sweeter and richer. Butternut Squash can be roasted, sautéed, toasted, puréed, boiled or mashed.
